Day 1

This isn't really the first day of my training, but it is the first day I have decided to write down what I am actually spending so much time doing.
A little bit about me:
I have always considered myself an active person, but never used to push myself to any kind of extreme. This year, 2010 really changed all that. I started running more and realized, through the help of a friend, that I had a pretty good base pace and should actually try a race. I did my first 10k in March and did really well. After that, I decided to train for a half marathon. I did one in Orange County the day after my 31st brithday, May, 31, 2010. I had no idea what to expect and actually loved it and got 1:49 for my first time.
We decided to move to Utah in July and, once we were up here, I was just dying to do another half. It was really hard for my lungs to adjust to the higher altitude, but by the end of August, I felt great! I did my second half the last week of August. It was a midnight half, the person who crossed the finish line at midnnight won. You could start anytime after 9pm. I started in the 10 pm group and finished at 11:47 pm. I was so shocked to see that I finished with a better time...soo late at night.
My husband, David works at Elevate Physical Therapy in Orem, Utah. They specialize in triathalon training.
The whole concept of a triathalon was so foreign to me. I had kind of just gotten stuck in my running world and really wasn't much open to much else. Once I started talking to my husband (who is a cyclist) and the people he worked with, I was a little more open minded.
I met with Grep Philips, the triathalon coach at Elevate, and he did a little swim coaching with me. He gave me some great tips for swimming..form, breath, body position in the water...just what I needed to feel more confident in the pool. Swimming is still hard for me...because I feel like I am not getting enough breath when I swim..but a lot of that is mental, which I am continually working through.
I still don't have a road bike, but I have been riding my husband's old bike, which is on a trainer in our basement...kind of like my own spin class.. I know it's not like the road, but until I get my bike (hopefully by next week), it will have to do.
I haven't been running as long distances the last few months, since I started training, but running after riding a bike for an hour..now that's a dfferent story! IT is hard, but starting to feel more comfortable.

In a nut shell, that is the base of what has happened this year. I hope to use this blog as a way to journal and keep a record of my training and the races I do. I am hoping to do my first sprint tri in November, the indoor tri series at Elevate and ultimately do the half iron man in Boise, Idaho..June 1st 2011.

I hope to post my daily training, tips I learn from my coach, Greg, my physical therapist (and husband), David, and other triathaletes I talk to. Hopefully I can also include some recipes and other food ideas as I start to eat more "clean" foods. I think this is the next step in taking my training seriously..to get rid of the food that isn't helping me to get there I want to go. In this whole process, with the help from my food coach, Cody (who owns Dot Phit-the training company, also at Elevate in Orem, I can continue to lower my body fat and lose a few more pounds.
